“The Effects of Alternative Data on Misreporting"
Abstract: New data sources, such as credit card transactions and satellite coverage, help reduce information asymmetry between managers and external stakeholders. I investigate whether these new sources of information influence managers' decisions to manipulate real activities and accounting reports, driven by changes in investors' monitoring capabilities. To explore the impact of the adoption and use of alternative data by financial markets, I develop a novel measure based on employment data from sophisticated investors, capturing their investment in alternative data. My findings indicate that increased coverage of alternative data affects managerial behavior in treated firms, reducing the likelihood of real earnings management and leading to a shift towards accrual manipulation.

“Local Information Environment, Corporate Disclosure, and Depositors Reaction"
Solo authored, preparing for submission.
Abstract: Variation in the geographical presence of public firms, which are subject to mandatory disclosure, introduces heterogeneity in the amount of information available in local economies. I investigate how corporate disclosure shapes local information environments and how this relationship affects the behavior of bank depositors. By studying deposit growth, volatility, and offered interest rates, I provide evidence of the role of firm-disclosed accounting information on depositors’ behavior. A stronger presence of public firms in a given county is associated with higher deposit volatility and stronger deposit flows from local to non-local banks, despite the former offering higher interest rates. The results on the effect of public firm presence on the banking industry represent a novel spillover effect of mandatory and standardized disclosure.
